A tribute to a recently deceased friend.
I knew a man once, Derek D., who was a perfect friend to me.
We met in school and had a blast; we sang, we laughed, we gamed: the past.
He graduated before me, and that’s the last of him I’d see;
He moved away and I remained, enriched by what from him I’d gained.
I knew a man once, Derek D.; last week he died from injury
Sustained because someone like me drove just a bit too caution-free.
So if some angel wends you way who seems more bright in every way
Than even angels tend to be, ask if he’s Derek, surname D.
I knew a man once, Derek D.; again one day his face I’ll see.
’Til then, I hope that I may be one tenth as good as Derek D.
