Thanks a lot. I have suspected it is the stacksize, but
-- I was confused by my assumption that 2700000 x 3 x 4 > 64M (the famous
   difference between 64M an 64000000!) [ x 3 x 8, of course] and
-- I did not know how to change the stacksize (we had tried 'ulimit').

Now it runs, but there are too many competitors in the machine at the moment
to obtain correct results. I will report to you later.
