Prof. Evans is awesome! He did
such a wonderful job making this course fun and
interesting. Not only did he do a great job of
coming up with new examples to explain concepts,
but he devoted countless office hours both in and
out of the lab to help students with their
programs. This class was very rewarding, and I
feel that the credit goes solely to "Coach" Dave
Evans.
Dave was awesome! He is by far
one of the greatest professors I have ever had! He
was always there to answer any questions we had
via email or in his office. I have learned a lot
in the class! The class was very well structured
and the lectures made a lot of sense. One thing
that I would change, is I would make the slides
available beforehand, to facilitate note-taking.
In general, the class was GREAT! I did not expect
to enjoy the class so much, and because of the
class, I am actually going to continue taking
Computer Science, and I have to thank Dave for
that!
Although it was required for me
to take this class, the instructor made it
exciting and energetic. I would definitely take
this class, despite the challenging subject
matter, if it was not required.
Professor David Evans generally
cares whether his students are grasping the
material. The grades aren't his main focus, he
cares whether you will be able to understand this
material beyond CS201J. He genuinely cares for his
students and he has definitely made this semester
a pleasant one for those of us who would have been
suffering through CS201. He definitely should
assist in the instruction of the introductory
level CS classes as well because his teaching
method is what is needed for students to have a
better CS foundation to build upon in a college
atmosphere. David Evans is great!
I thought that the setup of this
course was fantastic- it was well thought through,
we learned and still had fun, it was a new
approach to CS, and it was as interesting as CS
can get I believe. I also think that Prof. Evans
is highly qualified and very intelligent. He has
120% understanding of EVERYTHING and his
excellence in CS inspires me to pursue something
that I enjoy and become as good in it as he is in
CS. OVERALL: COACH ROCKS!!!!!
David Evans was an outstanding
professor for the course, but I believe the basics
of Java really need to be reviewed at the
beginning of the course. Also, I believe the
problem sets should have assigned partners/groups
because I didn't know anybody in the class and
could have benefitted very much by having a
partner. The slides and the handouts in class are
excellent teaching methods along with the written
examples.
Dave's class is very good at
teaching subjects that can not be learned from
books. And somehow at the same time he encorages
you to learn things out of books and gives you the
confidence to apply your knowedge to knew
programming languages. I doubt that there is a
better cs class anywhere.
Exellent course and an ecellent
instructer
An excellent class unlike CS202
Discrete math which sucks and shouldn't be
required in its present form!!!
David Evans is a stellar
professor and a super guy. HE was ALWAYS available
for help when needed, and he always got back to
the students promptly and efficiently. He
encouraged creative thinking while at the same
time emphasing the importance of the fundamental
concepts of the class. The material taught in the
class is something that the students will retain
since it wasn't littered by useless and trivial
facts but instead consisted of important and
universally applicable ideas. One mark of a good
course in my opinion is that a student's grade
should be relfective of the amount of effort
he/she is willing to put into that class.
Therefore I conclude that this course was
impeccable! I have no criticism to relate only
praise of David Evans, his abilities as a
professor and his genuine concern for the well
being of his students. His dedication to this job
is truly remarkable. I have not yet encountered
such another professor during my time at the
University, and it is highly questionable that I
will. In the chance that he reads this evaluation
I would like to sincerely thank him for all of his
motivation and help and just plain "awesomeness".
Though this class was hard work, it was my
favorite class this semster-and in the
E-school-this is praise indeed! Thanks coach!
It's very clear that he put a lot
of thought into every assignment and lecture. It's
very refreshing to have a professor give a test or
homework assignment not merely to record a grade,
but to ensure the students take something from it.
I understand why we were doing an assignment,
which made me more willing to work on it. He was
one of the best professors I've had at UVa thus
far.
Very good teacher. It can be very
useful to format the lectures or the lab sessions
to be in a computer lab so we can apply what we
learn right there. Out of the classroom, solving
the problem sets was really hard.
Great class! Really inspired me
and got me excited about the course material.
Dave Evans truly loves and
understands what he does. I honestly think that
this class should not be changed, modified, or
incorporated into cs 201 next year. This class is
far more engaging and beneficial for those not in
the CS major. Thats all.
I don't think you can find a
better instructor than David Evans. He is very
helpful when he is asked for help for HW's. He
does not give away the answers for HW's, but he
will raise some questions that lead to the answers
and makes you think at the same time.
Coach makes a very difficult
subject somewhat understandable and designs
homework assignments that really make you think.
He creates a nonpressured learning environment as
he allows collaboration among peers.
Dave is da man!!!!!!
Difficult class and subject
matter but professor went way beyond "call of
duty" in helping students. Suggestions: Make
lectures less theoretical and improve classroom
involvement.
