Friday Poem

Couplets about vegetables.

Don’t skip syllables. It’s broc·co·li, ve·ge·tab·les, prin·ci·pal·ly, etc.

Untitled Poem

Cauliflower’s broccoli that’s pale.
Spinach is more popular than kale.
Okra has a lot of latex in it.
Kraut is bad no matter how you spin in.
Lettuce is as flavorless as water.
Onion is good cold but better hotter.
Pepper’s hot to mammals, not to birds.
Cucumbers are often used by Kurds.
No one knows what radishes are for.
Taters are a staple of the poor.
Greens of pines are edible but bitter.Pines are edible, but yew is not…
Carrot tops are eco-friendly litter.
Leeks and kohl rabi and mustard greens,
Arugula and peas and aubergines,
Brussels sprouts, asparagus and beets,
Mangold, seakale and silverbeets,
Rhubarb, tomatillos, garlic cloves…
So many green and leafy treasure troves!

But vegetables aren’t as good to eat
As anything that’s principally wheat.
