Friday Poem

Today is an etymological holiday.

Untitled Poem

’Twas a fifth of November four centuries ago That Fawkes’s gunpowder did fail to blow. His treason in effigy since then recalled has led to a word that I’ve often been called. For “‍guy‍” through the years has meant “‍ugly‍” and “‍traitor‍”; Colonial usage evolved it ’til later It lost it’s old vitriol; now ’tis quite mild, But ’tis still a word because once ’twas reviled.
