Computing Information

These pages have information on the computing services and resources provided by the UVA Computer Science Department.

Computing services and resources are accessed via a CS Dept computing account. Faculty and graduate students have accounts created for them, undergraduates majoring in CS or taking CS courses can request a CS account.

When you start at UVA, you get a userid (something like “abc1de”), which you use to access general UVA sites like Collab or NetBadge systems. When you get a CS Dept. account, you will have an identical userid (“abc1de”), but a different password than the one you use for general UVA systems. When the CS account is created for you, you are sent an email with a temporary password that needs to be changed upon first login. See Account Information below.

2024 Updates & Changes

  • May:
    • The SLURM job scheduler system has been overhauled. Jobs must now specify resources when submitting a job to the cluster. Further, jobs are constrained to the resources allocated for each job. For more information and for example usage, visit our wiki page for (SLURM)
    • A software module for Apptainer software in the CS environment for using containers. The module is named apptainer and can be loaded and used throughout the environment. Please send feedback to cshelpdesk@virginia.edu (Apptainer Usage Guide)
  • July:
    • Email notifications for SLURM jobs based on job state changes (i.e. a job starts or finishes) has been enabled
    • The network topology has been altered to improve network speeds between compute nodes
  • August:
    • Web services have been moved to a new web server
    • Fileservers have been upgraded to have a higher CPU core count
    • The capacity for /bigtemp has been increased to 102TBs of volatile (scratch space) storage
  • Oct:
    • A general purpose ARM64 Architecture server named arm01 has been added and is available for SSH login

CS Account Password Reset

Reset your Computer Science Department account password: Use the Password Reset Tool

(New account users cannot use the password reset tool until they change their temporary password. See Account Information below.)

Server Software

Most common Linux software is already available on our systems! There is no need to install it. See Software Modules for more information.

Papercut Printing

Due to changes in Microsoft server, many Windows 11 laptops and desktops will no longer be able to print via our print server. To address this, we have deployed a solution called “papercut” that will help ease things.

Simply go to: Papercut server

You should be able to install and select printers following the prompts!

Account Information

Faculty and graduate students have Computer Science (CS) accounts created for them, undergraduates in CS or Computer Engineering (CPE) or taking CS courses can request an account by sending an email to cshelpdesk@virginia.edu.

When your account for the Computer Science network has been created, you will be emailed the account information. Welcome!

Your account is for logging into servers and desktops within the CS Dept. It is NOT for CS websites or general UVA systems like Collab or other general UVA systems. Even though your user id is the same as your NetBadge user id used for UVA systems, your CS account password is only for CS Dept. servers and desktop systems.

New accounts are assigned a temporary password, so the first time you log in you will be asked to set a new password. The ONLY way to change your temporary password is to open a “terminal” window on your laptop or desktop, and use ssh to portal.cs.virginia.edu, for example “ssh abc1de@portal.cs.virginia.edu”. You will then be asked for a new password, which you should set to a password you typically use. You will then use this password to login to all CS network systems. See Linux SSH Access for more information. You cannot use the Password Reset tool link above to change your temporary password.

Note: if you want to use a Linux remote desktop, (see: Nomachine Remote Desktop Sessions) you should FIRST login to portal to change your temporary password. The Linux remote desktop system will not let you login with that temporary password.

If you forget your CS password you can reset it using the Password Reset Tool.

Upon separation from UVA CS, your account will be closed one month after that separation, and your home directory will be removed. No backup will be provided, so it is important for you to save any files you wish to take with you onto other storage.

Regular accounts vs. mysql accounts

Please view this video for important information about mysql accounts. One thing not mentioned in the video is that your regular account and your mysql account are two different accounts with two different initial passwords, keep that in mind!

The CS Dept provides extensive computing resources. The entry point these resources is the portal cluster, a load balanced cluster of systems providing general purpose computing. From portal, other servers are available that have GPU accelerators, large memory sizes, and large core counts.
